In this contribution the authors report about tasks in a 2-year project (MMLAB-ER, Laboratories of Mathematical Machines for Emilia-Romagna, http://www.mmlab.unimore.it/on-line/Home/ProgettoRegionaleEmiliaRomagna.html) funded in 2008 by the Region Emilia-Romagna and aiming at the construction of a) a network of mathematical laboratories in five provinces of the region; b) a network of well prepared in service teachers, able to implement in their own classrooms inquiry-based mathematics education.
