Abstract

A new route for the synthesis of ionomers has been found: when PET is treated in a Brabender with a sulfonated ester, transesterification reactions occur providing a new polymer, characterized by a lower molecular weight and ionic groups as chain ends. The presence of the ionic groups causes strong modifications in the thermal properties of the material.
