After the collision in the Strait of Messina between the tankers Patmos and Castillo de Monte Aragon, on 21 March 1985, which caused the spill of about 1100 tons of crude oil, the Italian Government took special measures to regulate traffic through the Strait with the aim of preventing maritime accidents. The purpose of the note is to give an account of these measures and to examine whether they are consistent with international law.
