Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the most common renal disease in cats. This study aimed to compare the urine proteome of healthy and CKD cats to investigate potential urinary biomarkers of CKD. A total of 40 cats (23 healthy and 17 diagnosed with CKD) were included in the study. Urine samples were analyzed by gel electrophoresis. Urine protein to creatinine ratios were also determined. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis showed 27 differentially expressed protein spots between healthy and diseased cats. In paricular, retinol-binding protein, cystatin M and apolipoprotein H resulted over-expressed, while uromodulin and cauxin were found under-expressed in urine from CKD cats.
