For the past two decades, Distant reading has emerged as a new discipline for the study and research of literature. Born in the United States on the intuition of Italian critic Franco Moretti, it has introduced computational methodologies to literary studies and literary labs to university departments. The goal is to measure literary texts and unearth latencies that would not be readable with traditional critical work. But 20 years later, the new discipline has essentially failed to achieve its main goal of revolutionizing the activity of literary criticism. The main aspect for which it has been repeatedly criticized in the past and for which it is still being criticized today lies in a substantial lack of theoretical framework. Moretti had initially proposed theoretical frameworks for the new discipline and had conducted early studies always trying to anchor them in literary theories or theories from other fields of knowledge. Later, however, the laboratory approach took advent, that is, the conduct of experimental research and analysis directed primarily at testing whether new interpretations on literary texts could be derived with certain methodologies. No new interpretations came and no theory for the digital study of literary texts was developed. My research proposes a new methodological-theoretical approach with a theoretical framework based on the distinction between diegesis and mimesis and on differential analysis. The theoretical distinction between diegesis and mimesis is a criterion that Distant reading research has not embraced among its practices. The result was to obtain qualitatively inferior data, because in the eyes of the researcher, words are not associated to any textual dimension. In contrast, the approach that is proposed makes it possible to collect, simultaneously, data on writing and narrative structures and indications on aspects of language and the fictional milieu. On these data is, finally, conducted the differential analysis, a procedure (borrowed from diagnostics and economics) useful in forming additional interpretive for the expression of judgments.
