The perimenopause is characterized by hormonal modifications, such as decreased/absent levels of progesterone associated with high/normal levels ofestrogens. Estrogen levels become very low after the menopause. The progesterone deficit is probably associated with a reduced energy expenditure, and therefore to an accumulation of energy as fat store. Very high or very low levels of estrogens may, by contrast, reduce insulin sensitivity and favourfat disposition in the abdomen. Hormonal variations of the perimenopausal period can be implicated in the modification of body composition thatcan represent risk factors for the development of chronic pathologies in postmenopausal women.
