Background. In the second half of the seventeenth century the pre-industrial society made extensive use of female work.Method. Analysis of the association between workplace, working and social condition and female health in pre-industrial era according to the observations made in the second half of the seventeenth century by Bernardino Ramazzini.Results. Throughout his treatise, Ramazzini explores health conditions of women employed in different production sectors, describes women health problems and provides advices and remedies.Conclusion. In the second half of the seventeenth century, Ramazzini’s approach to the relationship between work and women diseases, sex-related or not, highlighted the importance of social and environmental influence on health and provided a very up-to-date message.
