On 17 February 2008, the Republic of Kosovo's independence was unilaterally declared by the Kosovo Assembly. By the end of February 2008, 21 States had already recognized Kosovo as a sovereign State. The case of Kosovo confirms the very important role that third States' recognition can still play in the creation of a new State, especially in situations were the new State has unilaterally declared its independence and its de facto existence as a sovereign entity is open to question.

Abstract
On 17 February 2008, the Republic of Kosovo's independence was unilaterally declared by the Kosovo Assembly. By the end of February 2008, 21 States had already recognized Kosovo as a sovereign State. The case of Kosovo confirms the very important role that third States' recognition can still play in the creation of a new State, especially in situations were the new State has unilaterally declared its independence and its de facto existence as a sovereign entity is open to question.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
