This paper focuses on the functional and textual features of SMS in relation to the technological surround outlined by new media. After discussing the relevant pragmatic context, including digital environment, it suggests some ways how to study this short and, at the same time, shorted writings. The digital text is a pyramidal sequence of inscriptions that proceeds from the binary code to the screen. In accordance to this view, the notion of "short text" turns fluid and open, because every digital writing space, whatever is its size, could be considered as a fragment of a potentially boundless text.
