The expressions of error probability are determined for binary and quaternary, coherent and differentally coherent phase-shift-keyed systems in presence of intersymbol interference due to the linear distortion produced by a real transmission channel. Such a distortion gives rise to amplitude and phase deviations, which must be determined, with fixed channel characteristics, for each distinct pulse pattern. This determination and the consequent numerical computation of the average error rate in some cases of practical interest will be reported in Part II.

Abstract
The expressions of error probability are determined for binary and quaternary, coherent and differentally coherent phase-shift-keyed systems in presence of intersymbol interference due to the linear distortion produced by a real transmission channel. Such a distortion gives rise to amplitude and phase deviations, which must be determined, with fixed channel characteristics, for each distinct pulse pattern. This determination and the consequent numerical computation of the average error rate in some cases of practical interest will be reported in Part II.Pubblicazioni consigliate
