Editor’s CommentsAs masterly described in Konrad Lorenz’s Nobel lecture, one of the hardest problems facing biologists studying the similarity in form between two different structures/behaviors is whether to trace it back to a common function (analogy) or to a common ancestry (homology). From an immunological perspective, the kind of problem Ottaviani and Malagoli tackle in their essay is of this magnitude. By observing that a common pool of molecules is shared by the immune and neuroendocrine systems of both invertebrate and vertebrate they surmise a common evolutionaryorigin. What led them to this conclusion is as much worthwhile as the conclusion itself, at least for two reasons. First, in their need to find the homologies between invertebrate and vertebrateneuroimmune mediators they dismiss the “gene sequence similarity technique” in favor of a new in silico approach: a powerful algorithm able to recognize an important group of proteins which are supposed to reveal a common evolutionary path. Second, by dealing with the origin of the immune system, whose evolution from innate to adaptive is still largely unclear so as to be defined “the big bang of immunology,” they allow us to move from the history of immunology towards a second level of analysis, the one of the HISTORY OF IMMUNE SYSTEM.
