In order to improve the image of mathematics and spread mathe¬matical culture, this paper offers examples of the relationship and reciprocal influences that ever since ancient times have existed between "recreational mathematics" and "serious mathematics", as well as - more generally - be¬tween these and society in its widest sense. The given examples show how much of the so-called "serious mathematics" (even the one that produces relevant applications) has originated or been developed starting from play or competitive contexts.

Abstract
In order to improve the image of mathematics and spread mathe¬matical culture, this paper offers examples of the relationship and reciprocal influences that ever since ancient times have existed between "recreational mathematics" and "serious mathematics", as well as - more generally - be¬tween these and society in its widest sense. The given examples show how much of the so-called "serious mathematics" (even the one that produces relevant applications) has originated or been developed starting from play or competitive contexts.Pubblicazioni consigliate
