The contribution reconstructs the role of the Bishop of Bruges, Emiel-Jozef De Smedt, at the Second Vatican Council and his relationship with the US theologian John Courtney Murray. Moving from this, it mainly focuses on the juxtaposition between the American and the Francophone School in matter of religious freedom.
