We start speaking about the educative value of the proof from the social point view, taking also into account passages by famous scolars. We evidenciate some frequent difficulties of the students in dealing with proofs and their low knowldege of the logical aspects of the proof. We face the question of the proof in arithmetic and the role of algebraic language in it focusing our attention on the induction principle and on questions lincked with its conceptualization. We also report and discuss protocols by university students.
