In Italy, positive secularism has turned into an “identitarian secularism” linked to the religious homogeneity of the citizens.This process happened because the Catholic Church is a strong and influential institution in Italy. The Church is turning its current status of minor voice and tries to strenghten relations with the mass media. From a political and juridical perspective, the Church affirms substantial equivalence between the Christian and constitutional values and places itself as the natural defence against Islamic fundamentalism.
