Daily water consumption was measured during June and July in cv 'Frantoio' olive trees grown in pots and irrigated or submitted to water witholding. Assimilation (A) and transpiration (E)rates decreased with increasing stress and stopped when leaf pre-dawn water potential dropped below -4.2 MPa. The recovery of normal A and E rates only a short time after rewatering confirms the olive resistance to arid conditions and shows the importance of stomatal control.
