Photonic crystals can be used in order to efficiently exploit amplification properties of doped optical fibers. The mode areas for pump and signals can be easily controlled, in particular reduced with respect to standard step index fibers, giving rise to a gain improvement of more than 10 dB for a fixed dopant concentration.
