The essay is contained in a book examining, in the light of recent armed conflicts and in particular of the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-1988, the reciprocal effect of armed conflict and international economic relations. The essays there collected are written by scholars from various European and American universities and research institutions. Before submitting their definitive texts, the Authors had the opportunity to submit their views to a learned audience at the Second J.H.W. Verzijl Memorial Symposium, entitled ‘International Economic Law During Armed Conflict’, organized by the Institute of Public International Law of Utrecht University in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on 19 February 1993.
