In the 1980s, on the basis of indirect information, Ferri, Sala and Tongiorgi (1986) outlined the general status of the ichthyofauna in the province of Modena. Almost 15 years later, by means of a sampling campaign covering the entire province (60 sites), the actual conservation status of fish communities in the local basins has been directly checked in the field. The data collected show a marked worsening of the ongoing process of degradation: although the total number of species has increased from 27 to 32 due to introduction of new allochthonous species (from 8 in 1985 to 14 in 2000), the extinction rate of indigenous species is growing and half of themich are now included in the Province of Modena’s Red List.

Abstract
In the 1980s, on the basis of indirect information, Ferri, Sala and Tongiorgi (1986) outlined the general status of the ichthyofauna in the province of Modena. Almost 15 years later, by means of a sampling campaign covering the entire province (60 sites), the actual conservation status of fish communities in the local basins has been directly checked in the field. The data collected show a marked worsening of the ongoing process of degradation: although the total number of species has increased from 27 to 32 due to introduction of new allochthonous species (from 8 in 1985 to 14 in 2000), the extinction rate of indigenous species is growing and half of themich are now included in the Province of Modena’s Red List.Pubblicazioni consigliate
