The research explores the relationship between religious journals, theology, and dissent in the post-conciliar period, with particular attention to Christianity and socialism. The analysis focuses on the Reformed Churches in Italy, with a specific case study on the journal Nuovi Tempi, founded in the context of the ecumenical and political renewal of the 1960s and 1970s. The main objective is to investigate how Catholic and Protestant dissent manifested itself in relation to the Second Vatican Council, the protest movements of the 1960s, and the political tensions of the time, particularly with the political left and socialist movements. The research questions focus on themes such as the relationship between the Council and 1968, political theology and protest, and the role of dissent within Catholic and Protestant communities. The study also explores whether Protestant dissent can be defined as a phenomenon similar to Catholic dissent or whether it is more appropriate to use political categories, ultimately questioning the possible theological implications of these dynamics. The methodology is structured in two main phases. First, linguistic issues and long-term historical dynamics are analyzed, which are essential to properly contextualize the topic and prepare the ground for comparison between different religious and political experiences. Subsequently, an in-depth analysis of the Nuovi Tempi case study is conducted, using a year-by-year approach. This method allows for the construction of a sort of anthology of the journal, systematically examining its content in order to understand its evolution and its theological and political implications. The main findings point to the development of an analytical model for studying religious periodicals, starting from the language used and challenging simplified categories that often overlook differences between distinct historical and theological experiences. The analysis of the Nuovi Tempi case—which underwent a significant transformation into COM-Nuovi Tempi and later into Confronti—offers key insights for understanding the evolution of non-institutional ecumenism and its impact on interdenominational dialogue. The future implications of this study point toward the potential for comparison with other dissenting journals and with the evolving relationship between religious denominations and social and political movements. This can help understand how experiences such as that of COM-Nuovi Tempi, initially marginal, came to occupy a central role in ecumenical and interfaith dialogue.
