Resistere al Papa: gli Appelli di Bonagrazia da Bergamo del 1332 e 1334 contro Giovanni XXII

This study provides the edition and commentary of three appeals written by Bonagratia of Bergamo, O.M. (d. 1340), composed in 1332 (the “Appellatio brevis” and the “Appellatio longa”) and in 1334, during his exile in Munich under the protection of Emperor Louis IV Wittelsbach. These texts were produced in the context of the controversy over apostolic poverty and the Beatific Vision, which set Bonagratia and several of his fellow friars in opposition to Pope John XXII (1316–1334). In addition to presenting the edition of the appeals of 1332 and 1334, the dissertation is structured in three chapters. The first chapter examines the manuscript transmitting the Appellatio brevis of 1332 in its autograph form, BAV, Vat. lat. 4009. It reassesses the codicological analysis of this manuscript in light of my recent findings and provides a detailed examination of the text. The second chapter offers a codicological study of the only manuscript transmitting the Appellatio longa of 1332 in its entirety, together with a commentary on the text and an analysis of several autograph fragments that I discovered in Vat. lat. 4009. The third and final chapter examines the autograph appeal of 1334 and additional material hitherto little known, likewise preserved in MS Vat. lat. 4009.

Il presente studio si propone di offrire l’edizione e il commento di tre appelli di Bonagrazia da Bergamo, O.M. (†1340), redatti rispettivamente nel 1332 (l’“Appello breve” e l’“Appello lungo”) e nel 1334, durante il suo esilio a Monaco di Baviera sotto la protezione dell’imperatore Ludovico IV Wittelsbach. Tali testi furono prodotti nel contesto della controversia sulla povertà apostolica e sulla visio beatifica, che vide contrapporsi Bonagrazia e alcuni suoi confratelli a papa Giovanni XXII (1316–1334). Oltre a presentare l’edizione degli appelli del 1332 e del 1334, la tesi si articola in tre capitoli. Il primo capitolo esamina il manoscritto che tramanda l’“Appello breve” del 1332 nella sua forma autografa, il ms. BAV, Vat. lat. 4009: ne riconsidera l’analisi codicologica alla luce delle mie recenti scoperte e offre un esame approfondito del testo. Il secondo capitolo presenta lo studio codicologico dell’unico manoscritto che trasmette integralmente l’“Appello lungo” del 1332 — da me identificato — insieme al commento del testo e all’analisi di alcuni frammenti autografi da me rinvenuti nel ms. Vat. lat. 4009. Il terzo e ultimo capitolo esamina invece l’appello autografo del 1334 e altro materiale finora poco noto, anch’esso conservato nel ms. Vat. lat. 4009.
