This research aims to investigate whether, and in what form, Pius XII developed a reflection on the Shoah, focusing on the period between 1945 and 1958, that is, from the immediate aftermath of the Second World War until the pope’s death. Through an analysis of Vatican sources and contemporary documentation, the project aims to reconstruct the evolution of Pius XII’s thought and public positions in relation to the extermination of the Jewish people during the war. The investigation concentrates on the pontiff’s public magisterium, particularly his speeches and radio messages, considered not only in their final form but also— and above all— during their drafting phase. The study of the text-production process is therefore essential and is carried out through an analysis of the various drafts and preparatory versions of the speeches preserved in the Vatican Apostolic Archive. The speech and the radio message were central instruments of Pius XII’s magisterium, and a philological examination of these documents proves fundamental for reconstructing the stages of composition and identifying the editorial choices made in the drafting process: what was retained, what was omitted, as well as the lexical or conceptual modifications introduced into the final version. Pius XII’s language is characterized by a constant expressive caution. In this context, some changes appear predictable and functional to the pontiff’s communicative strategy, while others are less expected and therefore particularly significant from an interpretative point of view. The textual analysis shows that the themes most closely connected to my research question are concentrated mainly in the years 1945–1950. Based on the examined documents, the elaboration of the collected material reveals a limited presence of explicit references to the Shoah in the public magisterium of Pius XII, with the exception of a few passages that follow recurring argumentative patterns and employ a generic language. What emerges from his own words is the conviction that such an approach was sufficient, without taking into account the portion of historical responsibility concerning antisemitism.
