“Della fedeltà letterale degli altrui film ai miei libri non mi importa”. Todo modo tra Sciascia e Petri

This essay, based on the paper presented at the «XV Leonardo Sciascia Colloquium», held in Siena on November 8th and 9th 2024, focuses on the main choices of intersemiotic translation taken by Elio Petri in his film version of Leonardo Sciascia’s Todo modo, concentrating on three exemplary sequences. Drawing on the terminology and conceptual tools of the theory of the image, this analysis seeks to underline the depth of Petri’s work at a figurative level and to highlight its significance. It aims to show how the film is a genuine essay in critical iconography, capable of restoring the political sense of Sciascia’s text even as it renounces literary fidelity.
