In postwar Italy, profound social and economic changes also reshaped the condition of women. While under Fascism women had been ideologically confined to the roles of mothers and guardians of the family, the fall of the regime and the experience of the Resistance opened new spaces for participation, culminating in the right to vote in 1946. Nonetheless, access to paid employment remained difficult and was often subject to the dominant patriarchal model. Within this contradictory landscape, Neorealist cinema—and particularly the work of Cesare Zavattini—served as both a mirror and a tool for reflecting on everyday life.
