This dissertation re-examines the Banū Abī al-Ḥusayn, better known as the Kalbids, as one of the principal vehicles through which the Fatimid daʿwa was articulated across the western Islamic world. Far from being a merely provincial Sicilian dynasty, the Kalbids emerge as a transregional family whose members served the Fatimid imāms in Ifrīqiya, Sicily, and later in Cairo, actively participating in the consolidation and diffusion of Ismāʿīlī authority throughout the Mediterranean. Their history reveals how the mechanisms of allegiance (ʿahd) and loyalty (walāya) that structured the Fatimid mission were translated into administrative and political practice within diverse local contexts. The research draws upon an extensive corpus of Arabic sources. Alongside the classical narratives of Ibn Ḫaldūn, al-Nuwayrī, Ibn al-Aṯīr, and al-Maqrīzī, particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of Ismāʿīlī texts that have rarely been employed in the study of Islamic Sicily, above all Idrīs ʿImād al-Dīn’s ʿUyūn al-Aḫbār, the Sīrat al-Ustāḏ Jawdhar, and the juridical works of Qāḍī al-Nuʿmān such as the Iftitāḥ al-daʿwa and the Daʿāʾim al-Islām. These sources introduce a specific religious vocabulary that illuminates the nature of the Kalbids’ engagement within the doctrinal landscape of Fatimid Ismāʿīlism. Their inclusion makes it possible to reinterpret well-attested episodes of Kalbid governance, documented by the historical chronicles, in the light of Ismāʿīlī conceptions of law, ritual, and authority. Methodologically, the dissertation integrates prosopographical analysis with the study of biographical, narrative, and legal sources, connecting individual trajectories with the broader structures of Fatimid authority. The first part reassesses the historiography of Islamic Sicily, demonstrating that the role and significance of the Kalbids cannot be fully understood when the island is treated as an isolated field of study. This awareness led to the adoption of a dynastic approach, which keeps the analysis centered on the family’s members while shifting the geographical focus according to their activity within the wider Fatimid world. The second part traces the evolving relationship between the Kalbids and the imām-caliphs, showing how their autonomy and dependence fluctuated with political change in Ifrīqiya and Egypt. The third examines how Ismāʿīlī legal and theological notions shaped concrete aspects of Kalbid rule, from taxation and justice to the observance of Ramaḍān and the legitimation of ğihād against Byzantium, revealing the interplay between religious ideology and administrative practice. An appendix gathers the main Arabic passages concerning the Kalbids, presented with English translations, to provide an updated textual basis for future research on Fatimid authority in the western Mediterranean. By adopting a historical-religious perspective that unites doctrinal and political analysis, this work redefines the Kalbids as more than local rulers: a family of Ismāʿīlī courtiers and governors who embodied, adapted, and transmitted the ideals of the Fatimid daʿwa across many generations and different regions of the medieval Mediterranean world.
