Lengua y migración: vitalidad y transmisión del quechua santiagueño en Buenos Aires

In the mid-20th century, the Argentine province of Santiago del Estero was directly and indirectly affected by events that altered its patterns of human mobility (Tasso, 2013). In this context, a significant number of bilingual speakers of Santiagueño Quechua and Spanish migrated to major urban centers, particularly Greater Buenos Aires. This movement impacted the use of the vernacular language, as it lacked social prestige and became confined to domestic and community settings, specifically within exclusively Santiagueño spaces.To analyze the presence and intergenerational transmission of Santiagueño Quechua among migrants settled in Greater Buenos Aires, this article presents an ethnographic study based on oral sociolinguistic interviews conducted with both bilingual speakers and their second-generation descendants residing in the region.
