The Commission on American Citizenship, established in 1939 at the Catholic University of America, played a pivotal role in the Americanization of Catholicism in the United States. Through collaboration between the episcopate, Catholic scholars, teachers and religious orders, the Commission promoted an active and integrated educational model rooted in Christian principles and American civic values. Drawing on the expertise of scholars in pedagogy, theology, and social sciences, and responding to the expansion of school and university populations, it helped shape a Catholic citizenry aware of its dual identity: faithful to the Church and engaged in American democratic life.
