Giovanni Bianchi: un professore e medico modenese alla corte del Duca Francesco IV d’Este

Giovanni Bianchi (1790-1857) was a distinguished university professor and physician who played a relevant role in the Duchy of Este during the first half of the 19th century. In view of his favourable relations with the court of Duke Francesco IV d’Este, Bianchi promoted not only the adoption of numerous medical innovations, but also the publishing of the “Farmacopea Estense”, one of the earliest modern pharmacopoeias in pre-unification Italy, which remained in official use throughout the Este territories for over fifty years. He also served on various commissions, including that responsible for the censorship of printed works, and contributed to the founding of the “Giornale delle Scienze Medico-Fisiche”, the first scientific journal published in Modena dealing with medicine, surgery, pharmacy, physics, chemistry and mathematics. After the fall of the House of Este, Bianchi’s legacy was unjustly consigned to obscurity. This brief biographical account seeks to restore his memory and honour his dedication as a man who served the city of Modena with distinction, prior even to his service to the duke.

Giovanni Bianchi (1790-1857) è stato un docente universitario e medico estremamente attivo nel Ducato Estense della prima metà dell’Ottocento. In particolare, grazie ai buoni rapporti con la corte di Francesco IV d’Este, Bianchi riuscì non solo a favorire la diffusione di numerose innovazioni in ambito medico, ma anche a portare a termine la stesura della “Farmacopea Estense”, una delle pri- ma farmacopee moderne dell’Italia pre-unitaria, che rimase in uso nei territori estensi per oltre cin- quanta anni. Bianchi fece anche parte di numerose commissioni, tra cui anche quella per la censura delle opere a stampa, e contribuì alla nascita del “Giornale delle Scienze Medico-Fisiche”, il primo giornale edito a Modena, dedicato a medicina, chirurgia, farmacia, fisica, chimica e matematica. Alla caduta della casata estense, anche la figura di Bianchi cadde immeritatamente nell’oblio, da cui questa breve biografia vuole trarlo per ricordarne l’impegno come uomo che si mise al servizio della città di Modena, prim’ancora che del duca.
