The paper addresses Wittgenstein's conception of morphology which lies at the root of the idea of family resemblance. The paper connects this idea with Goethe's methodology in The Metamorphosis of Plants, and draws out its metaphilosophical consequences. In this respect it shows how Wittgenstein's views differed from the much more radical ones put forward by Waismann.
