Per «il miglior servizio della religione e del principato». La riduzione delle feste religiose nell’Italia del riformismo illuminato (1758-1787)

During the 18th century, the need to reduce religious holidays repeatedly came to the attention of lay and ecclesiastical reformers, called upon in the name of Ludovico Antonio Muratori’s «regolata divozione», but also for more pragmatic reasons of social order and economic efficiency. During his pontificate, Benedict XIV granted partial reductions to many Italian States, but these concessions were soon considered insufficient. Based on largely unpublished documentation, this article aims to reconstruct the initiatives undertaken by the governments of the Peninsula in the second half of the 18th century in order to further reduce the number of religious holidays, in a political-religious climate marked by enlightened reformism and heated jurisdictional conflicts with Rome, focusing on the reasons that prompted governments to pursue such a reform, on the strategies followed to implement it and on the struggles with the Holy See about this matter.

Nel corso del Settecento la necessità di ridurre le feste religiose si pose ripetutamente all’attenzione di riformatori laici ed ecclesiastici, invocata in nome della «regolata divozione» muratoriana, ma anche per più pragmatiche ragioni di ordine sociale e di efficientamento economico. Nel corso del suo pontificato, Benedetto XIV concesse a molti Stati italiani delle riduzioni parziali, ma tali concessioni furono ben presto considerate insufficienti a raggiungere gli obiettivi prefissati. Basandosi su una documentazione largamente inedita, questo articolo intende ricostruire le iniziative intraprese dai governi della Penisola nella seconda metà del XVIII secolo per ridurre più incisivamente il numero delle feste, in un clima politico-religioso segnato dal riformismo illuminato e da accesi conflitti giurisdizionali con Roma, focalizzandosi sulle motivazioni che spinsero i governi a perseguire una riforma del calendario festivo, sulle strategie seguite per ottenerla e sui contrasti con la S. Sede in tale materia.
