The Shape of Energy. Fuels and Modernity in the Italian Industrial Imagery of the 1950s

This paper deals with the peculiar materiality traceable in several industrial films released in Italy during the 1950s, before and during the first stage of the economic miracle. Particularly, it focuses on methane and oil, two substances that play a pivotal role in the social discourses of that time, in order to explore the relevance conferred to materials as a key point to frame these films’ originality. The goal is to let certain aspects of the Italian modernisation process emerge and to explore new interpretive paths in the still less investigated field of techno-films, comparing them to the broader artistic and cultural environment of that period.

Il saggio affronta la peculiare materialità rinvenibile in numerosi filmati industriali prodotti in Italia durante gli anni ’50, prima e durante la fase iniziale del miracolo economico. L’analisi si concentra in particolare su metano e petrolio, due sostanze che giocano un ruolo decisivo nei discorsi sociali del tempo, per esplorare l’importanza conferita ai materiali come punto fondamentale che definisce l’originalità di questi filmati. L’obiettivo è far emergere alcuni aspetti cruciali del processo di modernizzazione italiano ed esplorare nuovi percorsi interpretativi nel campo ancora poco esplorato dei tecno-film, confrontandoli con il più ampio panorama artistico e culturale del periodo.
