Vescovi e Stato estense all'epoca della devoluzione (1598-1627): il caso di Gaspare Silingardi e Pellegrino Bertacchi

My PhD thesis presents a study of the relationship between the court of Duke Cesare I d'Este and the bishopric of Modena, at the head of which the bishops Gaspare Silingardi and Pellegrino Bertacchi followed one another in the years between 1593 and 1628. The fundamental focus of my research revolves around the event of the Devolution of Ferrara (1598), a very important historical fact that radically changed the political structure of the states of the Po Valley. The first part of the thesis focuses on a detailed bibliographic research that reconstructs the genesis and development of the Estense State, from its origins to the drama of the devolution. The second part of the project is based on the study of original documents within the Archivio di Stato di Modena. The consultation of numerous original documents has revealed a new aspect of the relationship between Cesare d’Este and the bishopric of Modena. The correspondence between the parties involved reveals a complicated intertwining of relations between Ferrara and Modena. To achieve this purpose it has been necessary to use different types of direct sources, which were subsequently subjected to a comparative research method. The achieved result have allowed for the first to bring out the fundamental role played by the bishops of Modena during and after the devolution.

La mia tesi di dottorato verte sullo studio del rapporto tra la corte del duca Cesare I d'Este e il vescovado di Modena, a capo del quale si susseguirono negli anni tra il 1593 e il 1628 i vescovi Gaspare Silingardi e Pellegrino Bertacchi. Il fulcro fondamentale della mia ricerca ruota attorno all'evento della Devoluzione di Ferrara (1598), un fatto storico molto importante che ha cambiato radicalmente l'assetto politico degli stati padani. La prima parte della tesi è incentrata su una dettagliata ricerca bibliografica che ricostruisce la genesi e lo sviluppo dello Stato Estense, dalle origini al dramma della devoluzione. La seconda parte del progetto si basa sullo studio dei documenti originali all'interno dell'Archivio di Stato di Modena. La consultazione di numerosi documenti originali ha messo in luce un nuovo aspetto del rapporto tra Cesare d'Este e il vescovado di Modena. La corrispondenza tra le parti coinvolte rivela un complicato intreccio di relazioni tra Ferrara e Modena. Per raggiungere questo scopo è stato necessario utilizzare diverse tipologie di fonti dirette, che sono state successivamente sottoposte ad un metodo di ricerca comparativa. Il risultato ottenuto ha consentito ai primi di far emergere il ruolo fondamentale svolto dai vescovi di Modena durante e dopo la devoluzione.
