The article focuses on the Franciscan reception of Christ's apocalyptic discourse in the Gospel of Matthew (chap. 24). The so-called 'Little Apocalypse' was a reference text for the dissident front of the Spiritual Franciscans and for Angelo Clareno, who rewrote it in the form of a prophecy uttered by Saint Francis about the persecutions that his few true disciples would suffer. Through John of Rupescissa, this prophecy circulated widely in Italy and in Spain between the end of the Middle Ages and the early modern age.
