Il nemico è l'ombra dell'eroe: Teorie e forme del soprannaturale nella saga di Harry Potter

The thesis addresses the theme of the supernatural within contemporary fairy tales, taking up the studies of Propp, Campbell and Orlando, and adding to them the evidence produced by cognitive sciences. In this way, a concept was defined, that of a magical element, and its rules, both theoretical and morphological, to then verify their validity by analyzing the Harry Potter saga. A morphological study was conducted on the latter, in the sign of the Russian formalist tradition, on the first and last chapter of Rowling's work, seeking the answer to four different research hypotheses. The results of the textual analysis have shown the actual presence of supernatural structures that fit perfectly within the theory of the magical element. Three out of four research hypotheses were therefore confirmed: a perfect correspondence was found between the theory of the magical element and the structure of the supernatural within the saga; as well as a cognitive matrix behind the functioning of both. Finally, a specific supernatural function has been attributed to each category of forms identified during the textual analysis. However, the differentiation between the supernatural described by the sacred text and that present in contemporary fairy tales has not been demonstrated. In conclusion, the theory of the magical element and the textual analysis of the Harry Potter saga confirmed the presence of a grammar of the supernatural, which combines symbolic aspects with cognitive processes.

La tesi affronta il tema del soprannaturale all'interno dei racconti di fate contemporanei, riprendendo quelli che sono stati gli studi di Propp, Campbell e Orlando, ed aggiungendo a essi le evidenze prodotte dalle scienze cognitive. In questo modo è stato definito un concetto, quello di elemento magico, e le sue regole, sia teoriche che morfologiche, per poi verificarne la validità mediante l'analisi della saga di Harry Potter. Su quest'ultima è stato infatti condotto uno studio morfologico, nel segno della tradizione formalista russa, su tutti i passaggi testuali in cui era presente la magia; e con questo metodo è stato analizzato il primo e l’ultimo capitolo della saga. L’obiettivo era quello di produrre una risposta chiara a quattro differenti ipotesi di ricerca capaci di unire temi dell’analisi narratologica e cognitivista. I risultati dell'analisi testuale hanno poi dimostrato l'effettiva presenza di strutture del soprannaturale, che si inseriscono perfettamente all'interno della teoria dell'elemento magico. Sono quindi state confermate tre ipotesi di ricerca su quattro: è stata infatti riscontrata una corrispondenza perfetta tra la teoria dell'elemento magico e la struttura del soprannaturale all'interno della saga; così come una matrice cognitiva dietro il funzionamento di entrambe. Infine è stata attribuita una funzione del soprannaturale specifica per ogni categoria di forme individuate durante l'analisi testuale, differenziando l’effetto generato dall’elemento magico. Tuttavia, non è stata dimostrata una difformità tra il soprannaturale descritto dal testo sacro e quello presente nei racconti di fate contemporanei. In conclusione, la teoria dell'elemento magico e l'analisi testuale della saga di Harry Potter hanno confermato la presenza di una grammatica del soprannaturale, la quale combina aspetti simbolici, di natura antropologica, a quei processi cognitivi che permettono la comprensione della realtà.
