Protocells should be similar to present-day biological cells, but somehow simpler (see Rasmussen et al. 2008; Schrum et al. 2010 and further references quoted therein). They are believed to have played a key role in the origin of life, and they may also be the basis of a new technology with tremendous opportunities. So the prefix proto may be interpreted either as indicating ancient times or in the sense of prototype.
