Characterization of the coherence properties of visible and near infrared laser diodes

Low-cost commercial laser diodes, originally produced for consumer electronics, are attractive devices for several instrumental applications. Even if the knowledge of the coherence properties of these devices is of great importance, this information is usually not available in the standard device data sheets. Therefore a thorough characterization of the coherence properties of some commercial visible and near infrared laser diodes was performed using basically a Michelson interferometer.
