In the summer of 2015 a survey was carried out to define the tourist perception along the Veneto region coast by distributing questionnaires in two well-known littorals: Lido di Venezia and Rosolina Mare. The two studied sites are both barrier islands that separate shallow lagoons from the Adriatic Sea. At both sites urban growth has gradually risen since the middle of the last century following the post – war economic development and successively, as a result of a growing seaside tourism industry. Nowadays these barrier islands are characterized by an alternating sequence of areas with mass tourism exploitation and lands of high environmental value. The data collected for the current study show the strong relation between territory and tourism. According to the tourism perception survey results, Lido di Venezia is a destination mainly chosen by foreigners, conversely Rosolina Mare is chosen by beach-goers that in most cases own summer houses in that area. As a consequence, tourists in Rosolina Mare are more interested in environmental issues and they are more willing to support in preserving the natural landscape with economic contribution. The tourist satisfaction is high in both localities. An overall positive evaluation for the main services such as beach cleanliness, beach width, space available for each bather, safety and facilities, was recorded. The main issues are related to the poor knowledge of coastal defense works and of the ‘Integrated Coastal Zone Management’ (ICZM). This aspect points out that local coastal management plans are not relevant in the choice of the holiday site and in the perception of other aspects including landscape and overcrowding. An increased attractiveness of the studied localities may be achieved by improving leisure activities.
