Goethe wrote Groß ist die Diana der Epheser (1812), after his journey in Italy and inspired by an episode of Acts of the Apostles, settled in the Lydian town, where Artemides-Diana was venerated. Both Frazer and Freud studied the history of the cult of the Goddess. Particularly, Freud speculated that the divine patroness during the succession of ages evolved and transformed herself, and finally became the imagine of Virgin Mary. The article includes the Italian translation of Groß ist die Diana der Epheser by Giacomo Scarpelli.
