Abstract

The School for Advanced Corporative Studies was founded in 1928 within the Faculty of Law of the University of Pisa, with the financial support of the Ministry of Corporations. Since 1929, its di-rector was an outstanding figure in the fascist establishment such as Giuseppe Bottai. The School attempted to promote the full acceptance of Corporatism ad a discipline in academic community, and proposed it as an alternative to juridical formalism for the cultural and ideological training of the future ruling class of the fascist regime. Such ambitious objectives eventually failed, notwithstanding the commitment of major players of national academic policy, such as the rector of the University of Pisa Armando Carlini and the direc-tor of the Scuola Normale Superiore Giovanni Gentile, for their realization in agreement with Bottai. The resistance of academic jurists in defense of their privileged position in the selection of future university professors and high-level civil servants was too strong. Moreover, since the half-1930’s the crisis of corporative ideals forced the School to adopt new training programs. However, the experience produced some durable results. The economic and juridical seminar of the School produces a series of publications, which presented to Italian readers the most innovative international experiences of economic policy, such as the Soviet Five Year Plan, the New Deal, and European “planism”. This legacy was significant in Italian cultural environment, which has not usu-ally been exposed to international influences: in fact, after World War II many students of he School became political leaders and public managers in the Republic of parties and economic plan-ning
