The essay emphasizes the theme of jealousy as the core of the Renaissance balance values which, according to Cervantes' conscience, were beginning to totter. As a matter of fact, jealousy is presented as the proof of morality: confronted to the uncertainty of life, the jealous man may become firstly ridiculous, and eventually result in tragedy. More precisely, Cervantes charges at those who believe to solve each problem only through the faculty of reason, without giving prominence to love. The essay traces an idea which informs Cervantes' work throughout, and in particular in the story about Timbrio and Silerio interpolated in La Galatea, in the story El Celoso extremeño, the story El Curioso impertinente interpolated in the first part of the Quijote, and the entremés El viejo celoso.
