This essay aims at providing some details on Francesco Selmi’s edu- cation and career, especially on his role as the first President of the Royal University of Modena. Moreover, it briefly describes the dif- ferent issues the Italian university had to face shortly after the Unity: scarce funds, downgrading, risk of shutdown, creation of a local con- sortium for the financial support.
