In this manuscript the use of 169 MHz Wireless Meter-Bus and 868 MHz Semtech Long Range technologies in smart metering is investigated. Our study is based on a set of experimental results, acquired in various measurement campaigns. A description of the employed measurement tools and of our measurement campaigns is provided first. Then, some preliminary indications about the packet error rate estimated within the coverage area in different scenarios are illustrated. These results show that, on the one hand, the considered technologies perform similarly at the same transmission power in urban scenarios; on the other hand, Long Range outperforms Wireless Meter-Bus in suburban scenarios.
