Through a thorough investigation of the translation of Macbeth by Milanese writer Giulio Carcano, the article argues for the significance of Shakespeare in both 19th century Italian literary and theatrical culture, since Carcano's translations were also used in the stage adaptations by major 19th century Italian actors
