Because of their low light, high humidity and low temperature conditions cave ecosystems differ from those we are accustomed to see on the surface. Since they are very sensitive and fragile even the smallest outside effects can cause irreversible damages, thus caves selected for tourism are under grave danger. Among these negative affects damages caused by improper artificial lighting are most visible. Light sources used in artificial lighting cause unnatural moss growth in their surroundings. Observations made at Mencilis cave clearly portray this situation. This study will analyze the negative effects of artificial lighting on Mencilis Cave, underlying reasons of these effects and feasible preventative measures that can be taken.
