Starting from a discussion of Giorgio Cremaschi, "Utilitarianism and Malthus's Virtue Ethics" (London, Routledge, 2014), the article adds evidence in support of Cremaschi's thesis that Malthus must be seen as first and foremost a moralist. Darwin, for instance, found in the "Essay on the Principle of Population" an analogy betwee the moral consequences Malthus drew from his principle and the biological consequences of population pressure. Furthermore, it is argued that the ideological framework within which Malthus's work must be set was so pervasive that it was shared by some of his adversaries.

Abstract
Starting from a discussion of Giorgio Cremaschi, "Utilitarianism and Malthus's Virtue Ethics" (London, Routledge, 2014), the article adds evidence in support of Cremaschi's thesis that Malthus must be seen as first and foremost a moralist. Darwin, for instance, found in the "Essay on the Principle of Population" an analogy betwee the moral consequences Malthus drew from his principle and the biological consequences of population pressure. Furthermore, it is argued that the ideological framework within which Malthus's work must be set was so pervasive that it was shared by some of his adversaries.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
