In this paper we face the question of generalization in mathematics teaching and learning. In particular, we firstly introduce some theoretical studies about generalization processes in the algebraic field. Afterwards we consider some studies where the students’ behaviours in dealing with the exploration of figural sequences are analyzed and theorized, shortly recalling the teacher’ role in the teaching of this kind of tasks and stressing on the need of an adequate teachers’ education.
