This work is a first attempt to revive some classical concerns of the historical paradigm in linguisticsat the explanatory level of the abstract entities provided by formal grammar and modern cognitivestudies. In order to achieve this purpose, it aims at unifying two traditionally unrelated lines ofinvestigation:I) the formal study of syntactic variation in generative grammarII) the reconstruction of historical relations among languages (phylogenetic taxonomy)
