The different functions of social identification are examined in two study on the adolescents’ peergroups. The first study inverstigates the functions of social identification in informal deviant and non deviant peergroups. The analysis revealed the existence of seven fuctions of social identification: ingroup identification, self-insight, intergroup competition and comparison, intragroup comparison, romantic involvement, leadership and cooperation. The groups highlighted different functions: members of deviant groups emphasised intergroup competition and comparison, non deviant group members stressed self-insight and understanding. The second study investigates different functions of social identity in formal (sport, religious, political groups) and informal peer groups. The analysis, of our first set of data, revealed the existence of six factors: ingroup identification, self-insight, intergroup competition and comparison, intragroup comparison, co-operation and romantic involvement. Sport and political group members underlined the centrality of intergroup competition and comparison, religious and informal group members highlighted the importance of intragroup cohesion, self-insight and romantic involvement.
