The book concerns the analysis of agency as interactional achievement, in particular the analysis of interactions in formal and informal contexts of education. The book draws from several field researches, conducted in more than 20 years, in a large variety of international and Italian educational contexts of interaction and participation. The book approaches the social studies of childhood in particular for what concerns the combination of (1) expert adults facilitating the construction of children’s agency and children’s narratives of personal experiences, and (2) the variety of children’s effective exercise of agency. This book is unique in providing both a theoretical reflection on the social structures that can support children’s agency, and a large amount of examples which show how these structures and agency work. The book is addressed to students, scholars and practitioners that are interested in understanding the most relevant and updated reflections about the practices to support children’s participation in terms of expression of experiences, view and emotions in educational contexts.
