University challenges the concept of a community of learners while it needs to form "well-made rather than wellfilled heads" (Morin, 2000). After more than a decade of large groups with students, online SDMs were offered during the pandemic, in the Group Processes course. As the medium disembodied the participants and made the message the real subject, the group setting intertwined the Foulksian matrix with Vygotsky's metacognition and Dewey's learning by discovery. Both large groups and SDM triggered a shift in the role of students from passive to active. Differences between the group devices in educational contexts are discussed.

Abstract
University challenges the concept of a community of learners while it needs to form "well-made rather than wellfilled heads" (Morin, 2000). After more than a decade of large groups with students, online SDMs were offered during the pandemic, in the Group Processes course. As the medium disembodied the participants and made the message the real subject, the group setting intertwined the Foulksian matrix with Vygotsky's metacognition and Dewey's learning by discovery. Both large groups and SDM triggered a shift in the role of students from passive to active. Differences between the group devices in educational contexts are discussed.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
